Martha Caroline Ramsay Hopkins papers, 1925-1940.

Letters, largely undated, chiefly addressed to her son Frederick Anderson Hopkins (1903-1970) and dating ca. 1925-1928, when he was a student at Union Theological Seminary, Richmond, Va. Letters contain family and neighborhood news and provide information on social and economic conditions in a small upstate South Carolina agricultural community. Other letters discuss a controversy at Fairview Presbyterian Church during pastorate of Jesse Newton McCord (1879-1957), appearances in Greenville, S.C., by evangelists including Mordecai Ham, and the public outcry in 1927 over Gov. John G. Richards' enforcement of the state's Sunday blue laws. Local news relates to depressed agricultural conditions, bank failures before the stock market crash of 1929, and such community events as the Fairview Stock Show and Fork Shoals Fiddlers Convention.
